I can’t find any information that ranks states by pollution, probably because of how difficult the task of monitoring mining pollution is. Mining pollution can be broken down into several different categories, such as acid drainage, CO2 emissions, water pollution, or mercury pollution. In the United States, coal mining is the most common type of mining and, unfortunately, one of the most environmentally destructive. Pennsylvania is one of the worst mine pollution states. Pennsylvania is known to have the worst acid mine drainage problem of any state. Additionally, Pennsylvania has the worst mercury pollution problem as a result of heavy coal mining.
Some other states with bad mining track records are West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky.
