According to the Digest of Educational Statistics, in the 2008-2009 school year there were 4,409 degree-granting institutions (including public and private, 2-year and 4-year colleges) across the United States. Of these, California had the most, with 426, followed by New York with 307, Pennsylvania with 262, Texas with 218, and Ohio with 209 institutions respectively (see second link below).
I would definitely agree that California has the most colleges. You can barely go into a city that doesn’t have a college, community college, or university in it. A lot of schools in California are very good schools as well.
