Which state has the most carpool lanes?

There is no running tally of the total number of carpool lanes in any given state, due to the fact that carpool lanes in a given state are usually connected to each other, and would therefore count as “one” lane.

As of 2004, projects to open carpool lanes were in effect in the following states, plus the District of Columbia:

Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington
