Great question to ask. Sports carry with a huge carbon footprint. 30 million new balls are made every year (primarily from petroleum products) and 2 million barrels of oil are wasted in over-illumination of stadiums at night.
The question is not “which sport,” but it’s how you play. You can get used equipment (used hockey sticks, padding, etc) if you shop around, which is a very eco-friendly way to play sports. There are also companies that sell sports equipment manufactured from recycled materials–but remember that it takes energy to reprocess materials. Participate in sports that hold matches during the day, outside, to limit energy use.
