Which species of cactus have the largest thorns?

Cactus spines differ widely, so it is difficult to determine which species has the longest spines. In fact, even cacti within the same species may look different. Spines had a broad field of variation – they could be needle-like, flat, feather-like, hooked, straight, soft, thin, etc.. Some spines can grow up to 15 centimeters long. Typically, the spines of a cactus have several functions, including protection from predators and direct sunlight/frost and collection of water condensate.
