The world’s most over fished regions of the world are the North Eastern Atlantic, the western Indian Ocean and the North West Pacific. 80% of fish in European waters are reported to be over fished. In UK waters some species of fish are now 10% of the number they were 100 years ago. 25% of fish are actively over fished globally. New Zealand has the least problems with overfishing.
In some areas of European and UK waters complete bans on the fishing of certain species have been called for. Total ecosystems are also close to collapse due to over fishing.
