In the 2000s Alaska was the leading silver mining state in the country. Much of the country’s gold and silver comes from the midwest and southwest regions (California, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana). Two of the nation’s largest silver deposits are in Montana and Idaho, in Butte and the Coeur d’Alene district respectively. The most famous gold deposit in the country may be the Mother Lode of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California.
