Which planets can be seen in the night sky with the naked eye?

    Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are the five brightest planets and, depending on orbit and other influences, can be seen with the naked eye.  The NYT Science section often alerts its readers when one of these planets is especially close and can be seen well.
