Exact global consumption rates are difficult if not impossible to estimate – but spanning humanities history, I believe that the most consistently and needed resource is water. Both in it’s fresh and saline forms water is used for consumption, irrigation, temperature control, transportation (of persons and cargo through canals as well as traditional channels + transportation of waste through sewage) – and more recently in power generation (all electricity generation making use of turbines except wind and airflow) and industrial cooling. It is even becoming evident that water is the limiting factor in many new age industrial applications (such as solar thermal power generation).
