For many years, the United States was by far the largest yearly contributor to global warming pollution. In 2008, however, the US was finally passed up by China, which is building coal plants and adding new cars to its roads at an alarming rate. At the same time, because of its enormous population, China still is responsible for much less pollution on a person-by-person basis than the United States. To truly address the problem of global warming, both China and the US are going to have to get much more serious about reducing pollution, and the US will almost certainly have to lead the way. This year, China has shown encouraging signs that it might be willing to seriously curb its pollution, but this developing country cannot be expected to do this unless the US clearly indicates that it is ready to lead the world on solving climate problems. This is why it’s more important than ever for the US to be a leader on curbing global warming, so that other countries will be willing to follow.
