Which is more water efficient: Washing your car yourself, or taking it to the carwash?

This is a difficult question to answer because there are many factors that affect each type of water. However, if we are to assume that you want your car to be as clean as you would get at a carwash, washing the car yourself would probably be less efficient. Carwash machinery is specifically designed to wash vehicles while personal car washing often times just involves a hose, towel and sponge. Moreover, there is the other issue of chemical runoff. When washing your car, the dirty soapy water often goes into the drainage system which flows off to sea.
