Which is more eco-friendly, cooking in an oven, or over a fireplace?

If the fireplace is also used to provide heat for a home, using the fireplace is more efficient. Ovens are most efficient when used for long periods of time and multiple food items. They are extremely inefficient for small amounts of food that only need reheating for a short amount of time (reheating pizza for example). In addition, the type of fuel for the fireplace will have a bearing on its efficiency.
