MRSA (methicillin-resistant S. aureus) is an extremely resistant microbe. Methicillin was developed to kill what penicillin couldn’t, but MRSA fought past our defenses. Some large hospitals show about 50% of isolates resisting methicillin.
VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus) is also another drug-resistant microbe. What is dangerous about VRE is that it can combine with MRSA to become VRSA, which is extremely hard to fight.
