Wood pellets produced in Canada to be exported to Europe have an energy consumption rate of 7.2 GJ per tonne of pellets manufactured, including 2.6 GJ consumed in the shipping process.  As far as paper mills, the UN announced in 2006 that 2.2 billion tons of carbon is released to the atmosphere per year due to deforestation.  Furthermore, the paper industry is responsible for 212 million tons of pollutants in the actual production of paper.  Depending on how efficiently biomass is used, wood pellets count potentially reduce greenhouse gasses by 98 percent from coal.
