Forests are a larger carbon sink than oceans, even though oceans are greater in size. Forests in the northern hemisphere have been estimated to store over 700 million metric tons of carbon per year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investigating a Conservation Reserve Program, by which idle farmland could be utilized as the largest carbon sink in the country.
