Leonardo DiCaprio founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which promotes to “secure a sustainable future for our planet and all of its inhabitants,” (Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Website) and works on many environmental issues. He helped produced and narrated The 11th Hour documentary which discusses the current devestation Earth is being faced with due to global warming, deforestation, and depletion of biodiversity. In addition, he is also on the board of various environmental organizations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Global Green USA.
Hayden Panettire participated in the protest to end whale hunting in Taiji and was featured in the documentary The Cove. She has also been a PETA spokeswoman and is involved with other environmental and animal rights organizations.
Natalie Portman narrates the Saving a Species: Gorillas on the Brink documentary for Animal Planet and is also extremely involved in the Global Green USA organization. She designed vegan shoes and is helping in the development in a green-friendly engagement ring.
Robert Redford has spent over 30 years on the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council and partcipated in the campaigns toward the conservation of Utah wildnerness.
Ed Begley has his own show on Planet Green called Living with Ed in which he lives a completely eco-friendly lifestyle. He also has written a book and travels to talk to others about the changes they can make in their everyday lives to go green and invest in solar energy practices.
George Clooney is the founder of the OilChange organization, “a campaign which aim was raising awareness about American dependence on foreign oil,” (“10 Celebrities -Environmental Activists“).
Some other popular celebrity environmentalists include Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie, Bono, Sienna Miller and Sheryl Crow.
Some famous environmental activists include: Hayden Panettiere, who wrote letters to both the Norwegian and Japanese ambassadors stating that Norway and Japan should stop whale hunting from occurring; Brad Pitt, who works for Global Green USA to build environmentally friendly homes; and Al Gore, a leading advocate for global warming.
In addition to the list cmgrannu gracious gave, there are many other famous Hollywood stars who are huge environmental activists. One who I think stands out is Edward Norton. In July of 2010 Norton became a “United Nations goodwill ambassador for biodiversity”. He is trying to bring awareness of biodiversity to people’s attention and is quoted saying “events like the oil spill can help people at least have a clearer understanding of the way biodiversity connects to our daily lives…It’s Unfortunate but true that sometimes negative consequences can drive change”. Norton is also the president of the U.S. branch for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. Through this organization he attempts to protect the 2 million acres of land in the Chyulu hills of southern Kenya.
