A shark has the ability to detect electrical impusles in the water created by another organisms muscle contractions. Sharks have evolved this ability because it makes for an extremely effective hunting tool. The “electro-sensitivity” in sharks is caused by an electro-sensitive gel in their snout/nose. The gel acts like a thermostat, helping the shark to detect minute temperature changes – such as those given off by potential prey – by turning them into electric signals.
