Until recently, Nokia has held the title of the greenest IT company. HP recently took that title from Nokia. This is because HP uses sustainable operations and energy criteria. Greenpeace determined these rankings.
Computerworld has its own list of Top 10 Green IT-Users. In 2011 it named Kaiser Permanente the as having the greenest IT division; “one of the few companies that have the data facilities team as part of our IT.” The IT team was able to slash power use of their three data centers by 7.2 million kW, lowering the company’s energy budget by $770,000. The team focused on cooling efficiency, because it was a lack there of which was the worst culprit of power consumption. By finding and sealing facility air leaks and re-engineering a raised-floor cooling system.
