Despite a nasty spill from a Sunoco pipeline in 2000 and some emmissions cap violations in 2005, Sunoco seems to be one of the most environmentally sound gasoline retail outlets. Sunoco has publicly acknowledged the role of human industry in global climate change, and as of 2007 Sunoco was the only major gasoline retail outlet to sign the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies principle, which means that all of Sunoco’s environmental activities available for public review and scrutiny – failures included. Other big gas retail outlets (Shell, Chevron, Citgo, Valero) have invested money in green initiatives like alternate/clean energy and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
There’s no easy way to say which big gasoline retail outlet is singularly the greenest; nearly all of them have some black marks on their records. The citations provided below have some good lists, including the pros and cons of each big gasoline provider.
