This is a difficult question to answer because how do you rank the “best”? I’m not sure there are any specific rankings of countries based on use of green technology, but we can get an idea of which are the “greenest” countries in the world generally. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI), an index developed by environmental experts at Yale and Columbia Universities, seeks to rate the countries in the world based on a number of categories including general environmental health, air quality, biodiversity, forestry and climate change. This is not specifically a ranking of countries based on use of green technology, but it’s probably the case that green technology and sustainable practices are probably being used creatively in these countries.
For 2010, the EPI’s top 10 greenest nations are, in overall scores:
1. Iceland2. Switzerland3. Costa Rica4. Sweden5. Norway6. Mauritius7. France8. Austria9. Cuba10. Colombia
Iceland is probably a good bet for the country that uses green technology the best. Nearly all of Iceland’s power is generated through renewable sources such as geothermal energy and hydropower, and it does the best job worldwide of controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
