In Europe, Cyprus is the country which prescribes the most antibiotics. They give out roughly 34 prescriptions per 1,000 residents each year. In second place is Greece, then France, and then Italy. North America prescribes 150 million patients antibiotics each year. However, determining which country consumes the most antibiotics is another issue. In the US, more than 50% of antibiotic use is in farming. Animals, especially pigs and chickens, are fed antibiotics regularly to speed up the fattening process. These animals are then consumed by people who ingest the antibiotics from their meat. Despite the number of prescribed antibiotics, one would need data on how much meat is consumed in each country and how much of that mean contained antibiotics.
