The United States has long been the world leader in electricity production. In 2008, the United States produced 4,110,000,000,000 kWh. China comes in at a close second with about 3.5 trillion, but after that energy production by country drops off dramatically. Japan is the third largest electricity producer, and they produce less than one trillion.
Adding to what maddie mentioned, this is also one of the reasons why the United States is a leader in releasing fossil fuels into the atmosphere. The amount of energy that we need to live our “American” lifestyle is not sustainable at all, and more needs to be done to make positive change.
