There’s two answers I can give, but one’s way more pedantic than the other. Technically, the 27 countries which make up the European Union collectively produce the most cars by a wide margin, but I think it’s cheating to call them the winners. If we go strictly by country, than Japan sails into an easy lead with 9,756,515 cars produced lin 2006 (the most recent data I can find). The second largest is Germany, with 5,398,508 cars produced.
According to the NY Times, the US produced 8.5 million cars and light trucks in 2008.
