Iceland has been called the success story of sustainable fishing. Having realized the importance of cod fishing to their economy (fishing IS their economy), the Iceland government has since 1995 set total catch quotas of cod and haddock for the entire fishing industry at 25% of the available fish population, sub-dividing this among all the different fishing boats. Furthermore, scientists check the levels of all fish species twice a year, and have the power to shut down fishing if they find numbers decreasing too fast.
