Spain is the global leader when it comes to wind power and technological innovation. This is due to government subsidies and feed-in tariffs that were introduced as a means of developing renewable energy in the country. This happened after a series of laws were passed in Spain following the oil crises of the 1970s and 1980s because the country no longer wanted to be dependent on foreign oil as their primary energy source. Companies such as the global leader Gamesa and Iberdrola were created using these tariffs at a time when they otherwise couldn’t have been profitable.
Spain is currently only the 4th largest producer of installed wind energy power, but due to it’s multi-national and globally competitive wind energy companies, Spain is a leader in the renewable energy business.
