Which country has the largest number of pumas?

The puma (most generally known as the cougar, but also called a mountain lion) is found across western North America and throughout South America. Unfortunately, cougar populations in S. America are not nearly so well-documented as those in N. America, making it difficult to accurately determine which country has the highest population. The IUCN estimates the total breeding population at around 50,000. I keep coming across estimates of the US population at around 30,000, so it’s fair to guess that the US is probably the country with the largest number.
