Chernobyl is still heralded as the worst nuclear disaster in the history of mankind. Chernobyl is in Kiev (then Soviet Union, now Ukraine). The environmental effects of this dasaster in 1986 are still being felt to this day throughout Eastern Europe and the Scandinavian countries. Most countries don’t even report nuclear contamination. 1968 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty was designed to police the nuclear community. This is an invention everybody will live to regret. Though the Chernobyl incident is the worst nuclear leak catastrophe on record, that facility was for generating power and not used for weapons. The only country still to this day to actively use nuclear weapons on a target (minus testing sites) in the United States in 1945 against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The effect are still felt to this day, passing on birth defects and heath irregularities in the local populations. Testing sites for nuclear weapons have also no doubt suffered, killing all life in the radius and harming generations more to this day. Though other countries have armed themselves with such weapons today, all but the United States have yet to use them in a military capacity.
