Like in many other areas of nuclear power, France leads the way. Europe’s limits on maximum radioactive exposure to humans is substantially more strict than in the US. To meet these limits, France has constructed specialized reprocessing plants for the spent nuclear fuel used in its reactors as well as in the reactors of many other countries. France is also the first to develop an official plan for geologic storage of waste, and will complete an underground waste repository by 2015. Other countries with set nuclear waste disposal plans are the UK, Sweden, and Finland.
