Currently, the United States produces the most plastic of any country in the world, however other large scale producers and consumers are Japan and China. As a result of ships traveling across the Pacific Ocean dropping plastic in the ocean and wind blowing plastic into the ocean from open air dumps, a swirling mass of garbage sits in the pelagic zone of the Pacific Ocean. Most plastic that enters the ocean ends up in the Pacific Gyre. My guess is that the United States is the biggest contributor to the Pacific garbage patch due to the volume of plastic we produce and consume.
