Bamboo has been researched in the recent decades as an eco-friendly building material due to its sustainability, quick cultivation, and sturdiness in earthquake-plague areas. For centuries, bamboo was used in China as building material. The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, based in Beijing, advocates for bamboo as a low-cost material with which to build houses. According to an INBAR fact sheet, 73% of the population in Bangladesh live in houses made of bamboo.

The Bamboo National Housing Project in Costa Rica helped build over 2,000 houses out of bamboo before being discontinued.
