The country with the world’s most ambitious greenhouse emissions-reduction plan is almost certainly the Maldives. Earlier this year, the newly elected President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldive Islands announced that his island nation would commit to becoming carbon neutral by the year 2020. The inspiration for Nasheed’s ambitious climate plan is the fact that the Maldive Islands are in imminent danger of being submerged under rising sea levels, jeopardizing the continued existence of the whole nation of 385,000 people. President Nasheed has repeatedly called on other countries, particularly large polluters like the United States, to follow his lead in committing to ambitious climate targets. So far, however, no other country has come up with a plan as bold and wide-sweeping as that of the Maldives.
