The U.S. and Germany have the largest gold reserves in the world. The International Monetary Fund has the third largest gold reserves. The Grasberg mine is the world’s largest mine in Indonesia. South Africa also has mines much of the world’s gold.
China is the world leader in gold production, followed by Australia, then the US and South Africa tied for third. The largest natural reserves (as compared to the banking reserves of the US and Germany, mentioned in the other answer) are in South Africa and Australia, with Russia third. Historically, about a third of all the gold mined on earth has come from South Africa, though China has led in production for several years.
