Europe has always been ahead of the curve when its comes to cleaner, sustainable transportation. Many of their major cities (London, Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam to name a few) have mass transit metro systems along with buses and are very bike friendly as well. In fact, the European Commission enacted the Action Plan on Urban Motility in 2009 to grow sustainable urban motility. They will review the plan in 2012 to see if any further changes are needed. Also, many cities outside of Europe, such as Portland, Oregan, Vancouver, Canada and Curitiba, Brazil have linked their transportation systems to sustainability. Many urban cities around the world, such as Tokyo, Japan, and Santiago, Chile just as examples, have very fast and large mass transit metro systems.
