There are no airlines that are regularly using alternative fuel. However, Continental airlines conducted a successful flight using alternative fuel on January 7, 2009. Jet Blue is in the planning stages of its own test. So although there are no airlines regularly using alternative fuel, interest is definitely high to enhance energy supply and potentially helping to reduce emissions.
In February 2008, Virgin Atlantic Airlines flew a Boeing 747 with one of its four engines partly filled with biofuel from London to Amsterdam. Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson said that the flight was an important first step toward renewable fuels. However, some environmentalists dismissed the flight as a stunt and pointed out that flying less and designing more efficient planes would be more effective in reducing emissions.
