The very first rapid transit system was the London Underground which opened in 1863. In the United States it was Boston, in Canada it was Toronto.
The London Underground (obviously located in London, England) is the oldest subway system in the world. It was opened in 1863 and featured the world’s first and only underground steam-driven trains. 30,000 passengers rode on the first day, despite an atmosphere full of choking smoke.
