An award program through the Department of Energy titled Solar America Cities, gave awards to 25 cities across the country between 2007 and 2008. These awards are for accomplishments in producing significant amounts of solar energy through conscious efforts to do so. The city that had installed the most PV technology as of 2009 was San Diego, CA. San Diego enough PV technology to accommodate 30 MW of power; and because San Diego is in the sunniest/warmest region of the country it has fulfilled that potential. San Diego plans to have enough technology installed by 2013 to generate 50 MW of power. While other cities like Austin, TX had more ambitious plans of achieving possibly 200 MW by 2020, no other city had achieved more solar power to date or had more realistic goals than San Diego.
