There are many canals still extensively used for commerce, whether it’s for tourism or shipping products. One well-known canal still in operation is the Erie Canal in New York, which is primarily recreational but is still trafficked by cargo barges now and then–a practice that is increasing in popularity again.) Other canals in use include the Cape May Canal in New Jersey, and the Sacramento Deep Water Shipping Canal (which is heavily used for cargo.) There are 31 transport canals still in operation in the United States.
