Major businesses that have left the US Chamber of Commerce because of its obstructionist stance on climate legislation include Apple, PG&E, PNM (a New Mexico power company), and Exelon (a Chicago-based power company). Nike has left the Chamber’s board of directors, also due to concerns about climate policy, although that company is still a member of the Chamber. The US Chamber of Commerce has become one of the principle forces opposing Environmental Protection Agency efforts to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the passage of national climate legislation. The fact that major companies, some of them not traditionally considered especially “green,” have chosen to leave the Chamber in protest over its backward climate stance is an encouraging sign that more and more business leaders are ready for firm action to protect the climate.
