There a number of dangers that come from our over fishing, particularly of bait fish. Any fish from the minnow family, including shad, anchovies, sardines, etc. all are heavily fished by commercial fishermen. They are used for everything from bait to vitamin supplements. These fish are the primary staple of the diets of larger fish like mackerel, salmon, cod, haddock, marlin, tuna, etc. These fish then in turn make up the diets of larger animals like whales and sharks. The over fishing of small bait fish, which are a crucial link in the marine food chain, could have catastrophic impacts on the rest of the ocean’s inhabitants.
