The animals responsible for the largest number of human deaths are not large predatory cats or hungry sharks, but mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are dangerous because they may carry diseases – especially in tropical parts of the world. Yellow fever, malaria, and dengue fever are some of the most important mosquito-born diseases, all of which can lead to serious illness and death. Though these diseases have been largely eliminated in temperate regions of the world, in the tropics they continue to cause a huge amount of human suffering. Worldwide, over a million people die each year due to mosquito-born diseases.
