The concern surrounding e-waste at the moment concerns the practices taking place in developing countries. Reports predict that that in 2020 the amount of computer e-waste in South Africa and China will jump from 200 to 400 percent from 2007, and will jump to 500 percent in India.
Currently the USA produces 3 million tonnes of e-waste, with China following at 2.3 million tonnes due to all the e-waste that is dumped there from developing countries.
The other major problem with e-waste being dumped in countries such as China and India is that this waste is not dealt with efficiently or safely, with many products being broken down in backyards for metals such as gold. This releases many toxic chemicals and is a highly inefficient way of procuring valuable parts of these products.
