Whale sharks like warm waters and stay close to the equator. They stray as far as 35 degrees south of the equator, to 30 degrees north. They can be found in waters around a long list of countries, including Hawaii, Galapagos Islands, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Thailand, Australia, the Maldives, and South Africa. The only oceans in the world which they do not inhabit are the Arctic, Mediterranean, and southern. Whale sharks are rarely seen, despite their range, and typically only fishermen and divers find them.
