The first hydroelectric power plant was built in 1882 on the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin.  The Vulcan Street Power Plant (as it was called) produced 12.5 kW of power, and supplied light for three separate buildings.  In 1891, less than ten years after it was opened, the building that housed the plant was burned to the ground.
