Where is the topsoil going as we cut down forests?

It can get washed away into streams and rivers as it rains, or blown away to other areas. Erosion is a big problem when forests are taken down. If something does not grow to take its place and the root systems hold the soil in place, areas can loose several cms or inches of topsoil very quickly. Excessive mechanical tilling of topsoil can also lead to erosion.
