Originally, tobacco was grown in the Americas, from North America to South America. While South and North American indians have smoked tobacco for thousands of years, the product wasn’t introduced to the Old World until the 1500’s, and even then it wasn’t until after Jamestown was settled and John Rolfe began growing tobacco as a cash crop that it became popularized. Other parts of the world have used things like incense and other products to smoke in similar ways, however.
