India has approximately 3,000-4,000 tigers left in the wild and conservatories combined in recent years.  A tiger preservation project was started in 1973 when they were in danger of extinction.  Their numbers were around 1,800.   The tiger is the national animal of India.  Siberian tigers are the largest cats in the world.

India’s tiger population is large compared to China’s in today’s world.  Some reports say there are as little at 300-400 tigers in China presently.  Poaching has increased in recent years and studies conclude that the tiger may be extinct within one generation.  Around the year 1900 there were as many as 20,000 tigers in the world.

There are more tigers in zoos than in the wild, the World Wildlife Fund says.
