Several Native American tribes and communities are supposed to have engaged in cannibalism, the most famous being the Aztecs in what is now Mexico. The word itself comes from the Spanish name for the Carib people, who were also infamous for it. The Iroquois and Kwakiutl are also alleged to have engaged in cannibalism in their past, and the Kwakiutl have at least one dance that may be a reenactment of a cannibalistic ritual. However, it should be known that it is a common tactic to exagerrate the amount of cannibalism in non-Western societies as a way to dismiss them as barbarous, so take any assertion of cannibalism with a grain of salt.
