Though the Amish originally settled in Pennsylvania, the largest population currently lives in Ohio. There are nearly 50,000 Amish living in that state, followed by Pennsylvania with 40,000. Other states include Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, New York, Iowa and Illinois, with populations of 1000 or fewer in eight other states. A recent study found that the Amish have doubled their population in the past 16 years, with Missouri, Kentucky and Minnesota seeing increases of 130 percent.
