On the south-western coast of Britain, the Bristol Channel separates Wales from Southwestern England, in the UK. Here, the River Severn, Britains longest river, flows out into the Channel. The meeting of the River Severn and the Bristol Channel in Bristol Bay has the second largest tidal range in the world at 49 feet. A tidal range is the difference in water height during low and high tides. The greater the tidal range, the greater the amount of water that moves in and out of the Bay, which creates strong currents during the changing of tides.
