If they are alkaline batteries it is actually safe to dispose of them the way you would dispose of any waste because they are not considered hazardous waste. Pretty much any other type of battery however is considered hazardous waste, and most towns have a hazardous waste pick up day. Check your local schedule for this day. If you don’t want to wait for this day, bring them to your local recycling center and they will most likely deal with them for you.
